The first edition of Dartmouth's annual Science Olympiad will be held on February 15, 2025 and will be a Division C (high school) tournament.
Our invitational tournament will follow State rules. We will hold all 23 standard events, and a linguistics trial event. We will soon have release forms available, and all future invoices/other forms should be emailed to dartmouthscioly@gmail.com
Consent and Release Form for Minors: All minors that will be participating in the event must fill out the linked form.
Code of Conduct For Interacting With Minors: This form is required for the volunteers at the event.
The linguistics trial event will test competitors on a variety of topics relating to human language including phonology (how sounds of language are formed, used, and understood), morphology (how words are formed), syntax (how sentences are formed), historical linguistics (how languages change over time) and sociolinguistics (how people and societies affect and are affected by language). It will also test competitors on practical knowledge of natural and constructed languages, including demographics, transliteration, and etymology.
We recommend studying for the linguistics trial event by learning about world languages, writing systems, linguistics methods and terminology, and by doing practice problems available from organizations like NACLO, the North American Computational Linguistics Open Competition. Other good resources include Omniglot, and the YouTube series Crash Course Linguistics.
